Come You Back to Maynila Bay
Social Practice / Printmaking / Installation
2018
Come You Back to Maynila Bay centers around a linoleum block mahjong set I designed, hand-carved, and painted to lead public play-and-print workshops in NYC Chinatown and Las Vegas, NV.
I use this unique tile set to lead mahjong playing workshops for guests of all ages and experience levels while facilitating conversations around Tagalog creation myths and Philippine colonial history.
I record each game’s 14-tile winning hand. Winners then stamp printed records of their winning hands using an identical mahjong tileset made specifically for relief printmaking.
All winning hands join an ongoing print archive (consisting of over 125 “bills” to date). I serialize each print, and record the winner’s initials, date of play, and zip code.
