Come You Back to Maynila Bay is a community engagement printmaking project that uses hand-carved linoleum mahjong tiles to retell family narratives of my lola’s (grandmother in Tagalog) underground gambling den in the Philippines.
From November 2017-May 2018, I designed, handcarved, painted and shellacked a linoleum and wood 144-piece mahjong tile set incorporating reclaimed Philippine symbolism (the first and only mahjong set of its kind).
The Maynila Set. Linoleum carvings mounted on MDF, with acrylic and shellac. 42 tiles x 1.5 in x 2 in. 384 Pop-Up Art Space, Think!Chinatown, New York, NY
Playing Table Installation. 384 Pop-Up Art Space, Think!Chinatown, New York, NY
I use this unique tile set to lead mahjong playing workshops for guests of all experience levels and facilitate conversations around Philippine cultural literacy.
